How this GPA calculator works

Each letter grade is converted to a point value on the standard 4.0 scale an A is worth 4.0, a B is worth 3.0, and so on. That point value is multiplied by the course's credit hours, and the totals across all your courses are added up and divided by your total credit hours. That final number is your GPA.

Weighted vs. unweighted GPA

An unweighted GPA treats every class the same, regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder courses typically Honors and AP classes usually by adding one extra point, so an A in an AP class counts as a 5.0 instead of a 4.0. Turn on "Weighted GPA" above and check the Honors/AP box on the relevant courses to see the difference.

Common questions

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

An unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale for every class. A weighted GPA gives extra credit for harder classes, such as Honors or AP courses, typically adding one extra point so an A in an AP class counts as a 5.0 instead of a 4.0.

How is high school GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade to a point value, multiplying that value by the course's credit hours, adding those totals together, then dividing by the total number of credit hours.

Do colleges look at weighted or unweighted GPA?

Many colleges look at both, and some recalculate your GPA using their own formula regardless of what your school reports. It's worth knowing both numbers.
